Wantage sits in the Vale of White Horse, a short run from our base in Drayton, and we cover the town along with the surrounding villages such as Grove, Charlton and the downland parishes towards Lambourn and Uffington. The town centre around the Market Place and King Alfred's statue has period cottages and terraced houses with narrow frontages, while the newer parts of Wantage and neighbouring Grove, including the estates off Newbury Road, have modern estate housing that is more straightforward to access and generally quicker for us to clear.

We regularly clear houses in Wantage following a bereavement, particularly in the older cottages and terraces close to the centre and along Church Street and Mill Street, where furniture has often been in place for decades and needs sorting carefully rather than rushed out. We also do a fair amount of work in the surrounding villages, clearing farmhouses, cottages and outbuildings reached by unmade tracks or narrow lanes towards the downs, where access for a larger vehicle needs to be checked in advance so we don't turn up with the wrong vehicle for the job.

Wantage's Market Place and the streets immediately around it can be tight for parking, particularly on market days and during the Saturday market, so we plan collection times to avoid the busiest periods. In the villages, gravel drives, cattle grids and narrow lanes shared with farm traffic are common, and we factor this into how we plan the job rather than assuming every property will have easy road access, since a mistimed visit can mean sitting behind a tractor for twenty minutes on a single-track lane.

Grove has grown substantially over the last two decades, and clearances there tend to be more straightforward: wider modern roads, driveways and estate housing built with removal vans in mind. It's a marked contrast to the town centre cottages, where a three-piece suite sometimes has to come out through a first-floor window because the stairs and doorways simply won't allow it any other way, something our team is well used to planning for with the right equipment and enough hands on the day.

Downland villages like Letcombe Regis, Letcombe Bassett and the settlements towards Ashbury and Uffington bring a different kind of job again: period farmhouses, sometimes with several outbuildings, stables or a barn that has been used for storage for years. These jobs often take longer than a straightforward town house because there's more ground to cover, and we build that into the time we allow rather than rushing through it, working room by room and outbuilding by outbuilding until everything agreed is dealt with.

Whatever the property, whether it's a compact terraced cottage near the Market Place or a farmhouse with three outbuildings on the edge of the downs, we leave the site swept and tidy once the clearance is finished, and we're happy to talk through access and timing at the free survey before committing to a date, particularly for village jobs where the route in matters as much as the property itself.

Wantage's newer housing off Portway and around the Mably Way area tends to be 1980s and 1990s estate building, with garages and driveways that make loading straightforward compared with the town centre, and we clear a fair number of these for families moving on after twenty or thirty years in the same house. Charlton, on the eastern edge of town, sits somewhere in between: a mix of older cottages along the main road and newer infill housing behind, so each job here needs its own look at access rather than assuming the whole street will be the same.

We also get regular enquiries from the villages tucked into the downland folds south of the A417, places like West Hendred and East Hendred, where flint and thatch cottages sit close to the road with almost no verge to park on. Harvest time in late summer brings extra farm traffic along these lanes, and we try to avoid scheduling a village clearance during the busiest combining weeks if a client's dates allow it, simply because a loaded van and a tractor pulling a trailer don't pass each other easily on a single-track road.
