What it is
Bereavement Clearances: what the work involves
Clearing a home after someone has died is rarely just a practical task. It usually comes at a difficult time, often alongside probate, a house sale, or family members trying to agree what should happen to years of belongings. We understand that, and we treat every bereavement clearance differently from a standard house clearance because of it.
As a small, family-run business, Spencer and Cordelia carry out these clearances personally rather than sending a rotating team of strangers into someone's family home. We take the time to go through rooms carefully rather than rushing, and we set aside anything that looks like it might be a keepsake, a photograph, a document or something of sentimental value, so it can be checked before it goes anywhere.
There is no requirement to have everything sorted or decided before we arrive. Many families have simply not had the time or the emotional capacity to go through a lifetime of belongings, and that is completely normal. We can work alongside you as you go through things yourselves, or clear the property in full once you have taken what you need, whichever suits your family.
This service covers homes right across Oxfordshire, from a flat in central Oxford to a family house in Wantage or a bungalow near Kidlington, and every clearance is quoted for free with no obligation, so you can find out what is involved before committing to anything at a time when that matters.
Who it is for
- Families dealing with a parent's or relative's home after a death
- Executors and next of kin managing a property as part of probate
- People who live too far away, or are too unwell, to clear a property themselves
- Anyone who simply does not feel ready to face sorting through a loved one's belongings alone
When it is needed
- A family home needs to be cleared before it can be sold or handed back to a landlord
- Probate is progressing and the property needs to be emptied as part of the process
- Family members live at a distance and cannot manage the clearance in person
- The scale of a lifetime's belongings feels too much to face without help
What goes wrong
Why care and planning matter
These are the problems we are called in to put right after a rushed clearance. Every one of them is easier to avoid at the quote stage than to sort out afterwards.
Important documents or valuables lost in a rush
Wills, bank details, jewellery and small keepsakes can be tucked away in drawers, coat pockets or boxes that look unremarkable from the outside. We go through belongings carefully and set anything of that kind aside rather than clearing on autopilot.
Family disagreement over timing
It is common for some family members to be ready to clear a property sooner than others. There is no need to decide everything in one go; we can clear in stages, or hold off on certain rooms, so nobody feels rushed into a decision.
An unsympathetic or impersonal service
A large, impersonal clearance firm sending different staff each visit can feel intrusive at a time like this. We are the same two people throughout, and we are happy to talk things through as we go rather than working in silence.
Practical pressure from a property deadline
Probate, a pending sale or a rental handover can put a date on a clearance whether or not the family feels ready. We can work to that date without making the process itself feel rushed or clinical.
Deciding too quickly out of exhaustion
Sorting through a relative's belongings is tiring, and it is easy to end up saying "just clear it all" simply to be done with it, then regret a specific item later. We would rather you took a short pause and came back to a room than made a decision under fatigue that cannot be undone.

In detail
Bereavement Clearances: how we handle it
Working alongside probate and family decisions
We understand that bereavement clearances often sit inside a wider process involving solicitors, executors and sometimes several family members with different views. We are happy to liaise with an executor or solicitor on timing, and we can hold off starting until probate has reached the right point, or clear a property in stages if certain rooms are still being sorted through by the family.
There is never any expectation that a family needs to have everything decided in advance. We would rather talk it through and go at the pace that actually works for you than push towards a fixed timetable that adds to an already difficult time.
Keepsakes, paperwork and sentimental items
During a bereavement clearance we deliberately slow down when we come across anything that looks personal: photograph albums, letters, jewellery, medals, documents, or items that seem to have been kept for a reason. These are set aside for the family to look through rather than cleared with everything else.
- Photographs and albums
- Letters, cards and personal documents
- Jewellery and small valuables
- Financial and legal paperwork
- Items that appear sentimental even if their value is not obvious
Responsible and respectful disposal
Once personal items have been set aside, the remaining contents are sorted the same way as any of our clearances: reused or donated to charity where possible, recycled where they cannot be reused, and only sent to landfill where there is genuinely no other option. Many families find it a comfort to know belongings are going to good use rather than simply being thrown away.
If some rooms have already been sorted and others have not
It is very common for a family to have already been through a bedroom or a set of drawers, taking what matters to them, while the rest of the house, the kitchen, garage, loft and living areas, remains untouched. We are used to working with a property in that mixed state, and we will always check with you before clearing a room that has not clearly been gone through, rather than assuming it is ready.
If you would rather we left a specific room entirely alone for now and came back to it on a second visit, that is perfectly workable. There is no requirement to have the whole property in the same state of readiness before we start.
Clearing a property from a distance
Not every family member lives near the property, and it is common for one relative to be coordinating a clearance for a parent's or grandparent's house in Abingdon, Wantage or Wallingford while living hours away, sometimes abroad. In these situations we are happy to work mainly by phone and photograph, agreeing what to set aside before anything is removed, and arranging access through a neighbour, a solicitor or a keyholder.
We can also post or courier small keepsakes on afterwards where that is more practical than a family member travelling to collect them in person, and we will always confirm with you what has been set aside before the rest of the property is cleared.
Local context across Oxfordshire
Bereavement clearances come up in every kind of property we see across the area, from period terraces in Oxford and Abingdon to bungalows in Didcot and Witney, and each brings its own access considerations, whether that is a narrow staircase, a garage full of decades of belongings, or a garden shed that has not been opened in years. We plan for these at the outset so the day itself runs smoothly rather than turning up more difficult than expected.
Bereavement clearances are carried out across Abingdon, Oxford, Didcot, Wantage, Wallingford, Witney, Kidlington, Bicester and the wider Oxfordshire area. See our service areas for the full list, or start from the homepage for an overview of how we work.
