Spencer's House Clearance is run by Spencer Hathaway and his partner Cordelia, a hands-on two-person family business with more than 25 years of combined experience clearing homes across Oxfordshire. From our base in Drayton, just outside Abingdon, we cover the whole county: the university city of Oxford, the market towns of Wantage, Wallingford, Witney, Bicester and Didcot, and the villages in between, from the Vale of White Horse and the Thames-side towns to the Cotswold-edge parishes towards Witney and Burford.

Oxfordshire's housing stock is genuinely varied, and that shapes how a clearance is priced and run. Oxford itself has dense terraced streets, flats above shops and colleges with controlled parking zones and narrow access; Didcot has newer estates like Great Western Park with modern access but strict estate parking rules; Wantage and Wallingford have period town centres with listed cottages and narrow lanes; Witney has Cotswold stone terraces; and the surrounding countryside has farmhouses, barns and cottages at the end of long tracks. We have cleared all of these, so we know what to expect before we arrive.

The county's villages bring their own quirks: places like Sutton Courtenay, Marcham, East Hendred and Long Wittenham have a mix of thatched and stone-built cottages, some listed, alongside newer infill housing, and many sit off the main roads down single-track lanes that can be tight for a loaded van to turn on. In winter, some of these lanes get muddy or icy long before the main roads are gridded, which is worth mentioning when a survey is booked so we can plan the right vehicle and timing.

Along the Thames corridor, towns like Wallingford, Abingdon and Henley-adjacent villages have older riverside cottages that occasionally suffer damp or flood-related damage to ground-floor rooms, sheds and garages, which changes what can be salvaged versus what has to go straight for disposal. Further north around Bicester and Kidlington, newer housing estates and business park development mean more modern homes and smaller, easier clearances, but also stricter management-company rules on vehicle access and permitted collection times.

Whatever the reason for a clearance, whether it is a bereavement, a house sale, a hoarding situation, or simply a garage or loft that has become unusable, we offer a free quote and survey, work respectfully and quickly, and dispose of items responsibly: donating what can be reused where possible, recycling what can be recycled, and only sending genuine rubbish to landfill as a last resort. We are open seven days a week, 7am to 7pm, and same-day and emergency clearances are available when the situation calls for it and we have capacity that day.

Because we cover the county from a single central base near Abingdon, most towns and villages are within a reasonably short drive, so getting a surveyor out to look at a property rarely takes long, and we are happy to travel to the more rural corners of Oxfordshire, from the Chilterns edge to the Cotswold fringe, just as readily as the towns close to home.

We also see plenty of transitional moves across the county: families relocating from a large Victorian house in Oxford to a bungalow in Wantage, or an executor arranging a clearance in Bicester while living hours away, and we are used to liaising by phone and email throughout so nobody has to be on-site for the whole job.
